Church Security Incidents

I’m Glen Evans, CSA co-founder and editor of Church Security Alliance’s website.  Every week, we research church security incidents that have happened in the United States and share them on this page.  The reason for this is two-fold.  First, we want church leaders to recognize that churches are targeted by criminals for victimization of pastors, staff and church members.  Secondly, we hope you recognize the threats against churches and use these incidents to train your safety or security teams to handle incidents the correct way, so you reduce the chance of both physical danger and financial liability to your church.  Whether you are investigating, planning, or developing security at your church, we hope you find ChurchSecurityAlliance.com to be an excellent resource.

The act itself reveals the worst of mankind, but it also displayed God’s power to allow some of the family members to forgive Roof.

Intelligence Gathering For Your Church Security Efforts

Being aware of things happening in your community and in proximity to your local church is an important first step in gaining intelligence to aid you in your security responsibilities.

In the ten years I have been paying attention to church security issues, I have found the greatest threat against local churches is the local criminal who steals, burns and robs churches and church patrons. Much of the violence happening against churches are from people who are associated to it in one way or another.

What Can your Church Security Team Legally Do?

One of the concerns that many churches have when they look at establishing a Safety or Security Team is what are they legally permitted to do? Putting aside the well known separation of church and state limitations that exist, we all know that churches are required to follow both state and federal guidelines on many issues such as fire codes, employment regulations, food preparation standards, etc. When we look at the legal requirements, trying to understand what regulations apply to a church security team can be a very taxing experience. Adding to the situation is the fact that the laws and regulations in two neighboring states can be vastly different. Some states have minimal regulations while others are very extensive. In some states a church team must be a “Safety Team” not a “Security Team”. Finally, being “paid” verses “volunteer” can also determine what regulation you operate under. To help understand the process that your church will need to embark on, I reviewed the regulations for private security for Ohio. The journey to try to understand the regulations for our state lead me to contact the Ohio Department of Public Safety as detailed below.

Church security related to children’s ministry has never been more important. In the past several years, child abuse reporting has become more common place because laws have been instituted which force anyone working with children to report suspected abuse of children. No longer are churches allowed to use internal discipline when a child has been hurt under their care. In the past, churches have been hesitant to report child abuse due to the fear of poor public relations, and many denominations have had to later pay huge settlements as a result of the emotional damage done. With these concerns, churches have turned to increased vigilance to protect the children attending their worship center, including background checks of staff involved in

The lessons of the SoCal church shooting would appear to be the following:

1. All major Church events need security, even outside ones like festivals, feasts, etc. . This one was a festival.
2. The most common violent event in a church setting will probably be a domestic dispute. This man came hunting his wife.
3. These events happen so fast that rarely does one have time to call the police. Most shooting incidents occur quite quickly with some saying that, once they start, they take 10-14 seconds. This man walked in and started shooting.
